The term hackerspace or hackspace comes from the joining of the words hacker and space. A hackerspace is a physical place where people with common interests usually in science, technology, and digital or electronic arts; can meet, socialize, and collaborate.

Hackerspaces provide the infrastructure needed for people with the "hacker" mentality to express themselves and join with other like minded individuals in a real world environment. For example, they provide working computers with internet-connectivity, stereo equipment, video projectors, game consoles, various tools, and the space needed to work on projects. Hackerspaces provide an outlet for people who otherwise may not have access to these amenities, and a place to bring their creative ideas to life.
